Acupuncture for Pain Management

Acupuncture for Pain Management

Acupuncture is primarily known for its effectiveness in managing acute & chronic pain. Here is an article written by an emergency room doctor talking about their experience with acupuncture for pain management.

The article also cites a 2017 study from Australia that suggests acupuncture works as well as Tylenol, NSAIDs, and some opiates for low back pain and ankle sprains in the emergency room. The study concluded that acupuncture is “a safe and acceptable form of acute analgesia…[and that] it may be useful as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy or when pharmacotherapy is unsuitable.”

The American Pain Society has endorsed the use of acupuncture for chronic pain, highlighting that, “Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal, headache, and osteoarthritis pain. Treatment effects of acupuncture persist over time and cannot be explained solely in terms of placebo effects. Referral for a course of acupuncture treatment is a reasonable option for a patient with chronic pain.”
